Kerry Mitchell has been playing guitar since 1990 beginning with classical guitar later progressing to rock and jazz. Kerry has completed an Advanced Diploma of Music Performance (Jazz / Popular) at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (Greensborough Campus) in 2003 and in the same year won the ‘Manny’s Music Scholarship’, an award presented to NMIT students for the outstanding results and future potential.

 

In 2009 he completed a Bachelor of Jazz Performance at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). Kerry currently performs with “The Salvation Army Southern Australian Territory Big Band”. This band has performed at Festivals and hosted “Special Interest” nights (based on Broadway musicals).

 

In December this band will feature at “Our Christmas Gift” a Christmas event akin to “Carols by Candlelight”. From 2007 to 2009 Kerry was a member of the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO). During this time Kerry played alongside leading professionals such as James Morrison, Kate Cebrano, Fred Wesley (Trombone player for James Brown and Count Basie), John Morrison, Graeme Lyall, Joe Chindamo and Darryl Somers at venues such as the Perth Concert Hall, Perth Zoo, and The Ellington Jazz Club. In 2009 Kerry recorded a CD with WAYJO featuring arrangements by Rafael Karlen. Kerry has performed as a part of ‘Jazz in the Theatre’ at the Geoff Gibbs theatre.

 

This event features music chosen specifically for the events based upon themes such as ‘Guitar Heroes’, ‘Soundtracks’ and ‘Singer / Songwriters’. Kerry has performed with jazz duo ‘Indigo’ at Stirling Council’s Somerset Festival: Café Culture in Mt Lawley. Kerry has performed with Freddie Grigson, Ray Walker, and Chris Tarr as a part of “Special Interest” nights (based on Guitar Ensemble Music).
